We had a tour of the crater of Mt. Vesuvius before visiting Pompeii.  Here, a photo of the amphitheater at Pompeii, with Mt. Vesuvius in the background. 

A visit to the Solfatara Volcano, just outside of Naples.

We visited Stromboli, a continuously erupting volcano in the Aeolian Islands.

Hiking up Stromboli at sunset, so we could see the volcano erupt at night...

This beach on Lipari is covered with pumice and obsidian.

A visit to the ancient theater at Taormina, Sicily.
