General information about the establishment of the college:

 

Arthur, John Preston. Western North Carolina: a history from 1730-1913. Johnson City, TN: Overmountain Press, 1996, c 1914.

            Reprint of a North Carolina history originally published in Asheville, NC, by the Edward Buncombe chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1914. Complete with bibliographical references an index, including entries on the establishment of Weaver College and Brevard Institute. Available at Brevard College. Call number: 975.68 A788w.

 

Craig, Marjorie. The history of Brevard College and its forerunners. Bound typewritten manuscript produced c. 1955.

            Gives separate histories of Rutherford and Weaver colleges, as well as Brevard Institute, which joined forces on the campus of Brevard Institute to form Brevard College. Covers the first 100 years of its history, from 1853, when Rutherford College was established, until 1953. Contains general chapters on each school, plus biographical chapters on each of the institutions’ presidents to that date. Available at Brevard College. Call number: 378.756 C886h.

 

Craig, Marjorie. Index to the history of Brevard College. Typescript produced in 1973.

            Index compiled several years after the death of Craig which accompanies the history of Brevard College and its forerunners. Available at Brevard College. Call number: 378.756 C886h.

 

Davenport College. The memento. Lenoir, NC: Davenport College, 1921-[1937?]

            Student yearbook of Davenport College, it was the first annual published by the school since 1914, and had previously been called the Galax. Davenport, a two-year Methodist women’s college founded in 1854 in Lenoir, closed in 1937 and its assets were transferred to Brevard College, also a Methodist institution, located in Brevard, NC. Journal of the Western North Carolina annual conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, vol. 1, 1891-1899.

            Minutes and reports of the annual church conference sessions, including no bibliography or index. Perusal of the contents provides some mention of  Rutherford College and Weaver College in the annual “Reports of Board of Education” for each session. Available at Brevard College in bound periodicals format.

 

Papers of the Barnhart family. 1832-1963.

            Collection contains correspondence, business and legal papers, photographs, and printed materials of the Barnhart family of Augusta, VA, chiefly of George Gray Barnhart an his siblings and child, Jennings Dodd Barnhart. Letters from 1935-1949 from Jennings Dodd Barnhart’s daughter, Marjorie Anne Barnhart Bradford and her husband concern high school and Brevard College.  Available at the University of Virginia.

            Focus on Transylvania County, North Carolina, historical architecture, complete with index. Includes photo an information about WPA-funded stone fence and gate built at Brevard College, circa 1937, an oldest surviving structure built specifically for the college.             Contains information about the establishment of institutes of higher education in the state, brief synopses of colleges and universities still extant as of 1970, as well as about about former colleges within North Carolina. Features several tables, including a chronological list of North Carolina colleges, data on existing colleges, and a map showing the location within the state of existing colleges.             Two-volume work, which includes information about Weaver (also called Weaverville) College in its second volume. Available in Brevard College’s special collections. Call number: 975.688 S698b.

 

Weaver College: a junior college owned and controlled by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South Weaverville, North Carolina. Published by the college in 1924.

            Copy located at South Piedmont Community College in North Carolina. The catalog includes a school register for 1924-1925 and school announcements for the 1925-1926 school year.

            Contains no bibliography or index, but does have information in the “History of First School” section about formation of the Epworth School (forerunner of Brevard Institute) and its founders, Mr. and Mrs. (Sarah) Fitch Taylor, as well as some photographs of the Taylors, which appear in the following section, “Early Ministers and Their Work.” Available in the Brevard College special collections.
