June and July 2001 JR's Journal Sylva, NC to La Paz, Bolivia
|
| The night before my departure (6/27), I threw a good-bye dinner at
the home of my good friend Daryl Hale. Daryl, Benji Schults, and
my daughters, Elise and Elena were there. I grilled some salmon which
tasted great. Afterward, Daryl and I sat up drinking beer on his
porch, watching the lightning until 11:00. I was too beat to pack
so I just went to bed.
I got up at 7:30 and had an English muffin and tea with Daryl. My camping gear was packed in my black duffel bag which I inserted in my large red duffel bag. I stuffed the remaining space with clothes. I also put my large pack in and carried on my daypack and briefcase. The red bag is a monster. Daryl followed me to Asheville. I dropped my 4Runner off at Jim Barkley Toyota for repair. Elise will get it later. Daryl took me to the airport where I picked up an Avis rental car – one-way for $65.00. Beats the hell out of Delta’s $813 round-trip fare! I drove to Brevard and picked up some film and a battery at Wal-Mart
before going to my office to do some last minute odds-and-ends. I
left town around 12:15 and took 281 down to 11 to I-85 to Hartsfield.
I was glad to be rid of the red bag at check-in. My Delta flight
to Miami left on time. I read “Twenty Blue Devils” the whole way.
I sat around the Miami airport for nearly four hours before my American
Airlines flight left for La Paz. Incredibly, AA didn’t screw anything
up. The 6½-hour flight was quiet and uneventful. I read
some and slept about 4 hours.
