I didn’t sleep well on the cement floor.  I had to get up once during the night and was thirsty most of the night.  I drank a lot of water but the dry air kept me dehydrated. This is going to take some getting used to...

We hot up around 7:00 and had Honeycombs and coffee for breakfast. Brian brought some good coffee. I can tell already that it will be a daily treat. The climb was a little hard on me due to the elevation.  We walked up the street and started up the mountain around 8:30.  We managed (Brian did actually) to relocate the rest of the old sites and sample those we needed.  The view from the top was spectacular.  The descent down the far side was steep and slippery.  Loose rock was everywhere even though generations of local inhabitants had ivested millions of hours into building a complex system of stone walls. It's too bad they forgot to put portals in them. The rocks are so loose that a few fall over everytime we have to climb over one. It took me more than an hour to descend to the road. Science loses a lot of its allure when survival takes all of one’s attention.

This photo is looking down the quebrada we sampled in as we started
up the east side of the big ridge. We followed the abandoned road seen
on the right which provided nearly continuous exposure.

Our last two resampling sites were on the road.  We finally started taking new sites and worked until sunset.  We appear to be working through some lacustrine strata. The ride back to town only took about 10 minutes. Again we had a good dinner.  Rich went out and purchased some candles so we could have a little light. It is amazing what a single candle can illuminate. We transcribed some notes and then went to bed.  We now have some straw mats to sleep on.  I set mine up on the stage. The village is letting us use their entire community center.
