Chuquichambi

Today was one of those days where I was unsure if it was the elevation, my age, or my disability that was wearing me out but I sure was beat at the end of it. I didn’t sleep well last night, having to get up to pee 3 times.  Pedro and Rich returned from La Paz just after midnight.

We were in the field by 8:30 and started sampling up the old road off of a newer old road, but quickly switched to a footpath that eventually degraded into a streambed.  It was a scenic valley with lots of stone walls and good exposure.  I was drained by 4:30 when we started the 3-km hike back to the vehicle.  I was concerned about how much longer I’ll be able to do this sort of thing.  I know a lot of the problem is the elevation.  Life at 13,000’ is not easy!

The white building is the Chuquichambi Community Hall where we lived.
The adobe bricks surrounding the hall were eventually incorporated into a
new building that rapidly rose during our stay. It is destined to be a small
hotel. Below the church steeple you can see an adobe outhouse... it was
filled and no longer usable.

Back at the ranch, Rick cooked another good meal.  We then exchanged data.  I played harmonica for awhile. It turns out Matt has one too so we did a couple of duets. Our music apparently inspired someone else; we could hear someone playing trumpet in the distance. By 8:15 I was ready for bed.
