Chuquichambi
July 5, 2001

I guess it’s my disability more than my age or the elevation.  Today I walked farther but was much less tired then yesterday.  The main problem is the placement of my left foot.  I need to be very careful or it will twist out.  It did once today and is a bit sore tonight.

After breakfast, the mayor came to visit and asked us to all come down to his office.  The hot item in the Chuquichambi political scene, apparently for the last two years, was whether Rich had given his bike to the town or to an individual 2 years ago.  Rich gave it to the town but thought the individual might have misunderstood due to Rich's fledgling ability in Spanish…  We then listened to a lengthy reading of our credentials before the powers that be.  The whole scene was rather comical because it was such a serious issue to them. I mean, the bike was a piece of junk when Rich turned it over; I can't imagine what kind of shape it's in now!

Chuquichambi's central plaza: I was standing at the communal water tap
when I took this photo. The monument to the generals and politicians
who were in power when the well was drilled probably cost as much as
the drilling!

Even with that delay, we were in the field by 9:00 and hiked up to where we finished yesterday.  Matt is very patient with my slow pace.  Thank God!  I am slow!

We put in a full day of drilling before starting the long hike back to the Jeep.  On the way, we ran into a couple of flocks of sheep.  One of the shepherdesses did not appear to speak Spanish (the local language here is Ayamara).  We also ran into a bunch of llamas.

Back at the “ranch”, our routine has settled in.  We cooked and ate.  Rich and I exchanged data and all were in bed by 8:45.
