I didn’t sleep quite as well because the extreme cold challenged my sleeping bag arrangement.  My guess is that it was about -10° F.  After breakfast, we threw the football to stay warm until the sun rose at 8:00.  We knew that with a long day in the field, we could probably finish our work here.

We started sampling on the SE side of the main stream near camp.  After 15 sites, or so, we switched to the NW side and continued there until we reached the top of the tuff-capped ridge.  Rich sampled several tuffs which Brian and Brian had located the year before.  Their ages will be critical to our study.

We sampled the ridge-top tuff just before sunset and then walked the 3 or so kilometers back to camp.  The cold hit us just as we entered camp.  Pedro already had dinner ready so we gobbled it down.  Brian, Rich, and I sat in the vehicle afterward and worked over the data.  We also planned activities.  Brian and Rich would climb a nearby ridge to correlate the tuffs with last year’s sample sites along the road.  Upon their return we would break camp and head for Corque on the southern part of the east limb of the syncline to collect some samples for a rotational study.  We would then head for La Paz for a bed and hot shower.  This all meant that we would not be leaving via Chuquichambi so we decided to give Rich’s letter about the bike to Belén’s Maicu to give to the Chuquichambi Maicu.  Rich, Pedro, and I constructed the letter and he wrote out two copies.  Afterward, Pedro said he thought that this night would be the coldest.  In preparation, I put on an extra sweater and quickly fell asleep.
