June and July 2001 JR's Journal La Paz

| Maybe I am used to an interrupted sleep or maybe it was an overfull
stomach, but I slept well until 4:00 and just dozed until dawn. I’ve
had many strange dreams and this night was no different. I discovered
I had athlete’s foot as I lay in bed and many other thoughts raced through
my head. I got up at 6:45 and shaved. What a great feeling
after 7 days!
The four of us went to Alexander Café for breakfast. Still bloated from the night before, I just had coffee and fruit salad. The fruit salad was huge but I ate it all. It was very good. Afterward, Brian and I went to an internet café and caught up on our email. I sent Heidi Galloway a synopsis of events to date and asked that she forward it to the others in the division. I also wrote home, and to Mollie, Angel, and Edna. Things seem to be going smoothly all around. Brian and I had Lake Titicaca lake trout for lunch at La Andromeda. We then returned to the hotel and I got mostly caught up on my journal. The lack of light at night in the field has put a crimp on my style! I probably dozed for an hour because before I knew it, it was dinnertime. We went to Pronto, the Italian restaurant. We ate well but I couldn’t finish my Fettuccini Alfredo. We also had the good Bolivian Malbec wine we had enjoyed my first night in country. For our evening sojourn we went to the movies. After endless previews, we saw “Evolution”, a slapstick comedy about rapidly evolving alien life forms that try to take over the planet. It was terrible. We returned to the hotel and went to bed. The foot powder I bought at the farmacia in the morning already seems
to be combating my athlete’s foot.
