Day 12 Fotos

We let everyone sleep until 8:30, and left the hotel at 9:30 to walk to the Santorini Museum . It is well lit and well displayed with excellent examples of the pottery and frescos unearthed at Akrotiri. After an hour or so we walked to the bus station. Once we got the bus tickets, Bob, Anne, Drew, and I went to a café out of the wind and had coffee or hot chocolate.

The bus to Akrotiri was SRO. After about 5 km Aaron Post realized he had left his bag with his passport and money on a bench at the bus station. We informed Bob, who was near the front of the bus, and the bus stopped. Aaron got off at the rear door and Bob got off up front. The rest of us continued to Akrotiri and entered the newly roofed-over site. The site shows plenty of evidence of earthquake destruction, not to mention burial by the eruption. Unfortunately, there is so much metal in the building, it is impossible to get reliable compass reading. It is estimated that only 3% of the site has been uncovered so far.

After about half an hour Bob joined us. He had recovered Aaron's backpack where it was left by renting a car and driving it up. He did not, however, realize that Aaron had also gotten off and must have driven right past him.

We finished our tour of the Minoan Pompeii and had lunch at a seaside taverna which was excellent. After lunch, the students and Drew hiked over to the Red Beach . Anne, Bob, Heather, and I took the car and drove toward Oia on the north side of the island to look at road cuts in hope of finding some carbonized wood. I drew a basic stratigraphic column and Heather found a rodent skull which I am bringing to Jennifer Frick. After investigating the high road, we returned via the low road. We hit the beach once but just found Minoan ash. We walked up a terraced drainage and found abundant coarseware sherds and possible buried walls. The possibility of another buried settlement there cannot be excluded. The landowner came up to check on us. He was friendly and smiled a lot. I have no idea what he said.

We returned to Thira and the hotel via a mini-mart where I bought an excellent bottle of Santorini dry red wine. Bob returned the car and the three of us drank the wine while Drew watched a “Sponge Bob” DVD.

We had another great dinner in another second story restaurant called Stani. I had octopus and spaghetti. After dinner Bob, Anne, and Drew walked back via the Cliffside while I went to an internet café and wrote home. I returned to my room, wrote, took a shower, and retired about midnight.
