Brevard College's GEOL 270/AH 290 Field Trip to GREECE JR's Journal Naxos to Mykonos |
The students had partied pretty hard the night before. Only Sara and Molly were in the dining area when I came down and they were more than a bit under the weather. They told me that Emily and Kyle had gotten engaged last night. To the mild consternation of many of the students, we assembled at 9:30 and walked up the hill, through the narrow medieval streets that surround the Castle of the Dukes of Naxos, to the Naxos Archaeological Museum . It contains an excellent but poorly labeled collection from the long human history of the island. Our sherd collection from yesterday lacked evidence of Minoan and Myceneaen habitation but Myceneaen pottery, exhibiting a strong post-Minoan influence, was prominent in the collection. We returned to the hotel through the ancient streets. The hotel van was loaded with our bags and the students. Bob, Drew, a couple of students, and I walked to the port while the others rode over. I ran into several of them walking along the harbor in search of cheap gyros. We found a place where we got two gyros and a beer for E4.50. We finished lunch at about 12:15 and walked over to the ferry boarding area. The guitarists entertained the crowd as we waited. We boarded around 1:30 and were soon underway. I read about the geology of Mykanos and Dilos and then fell asleep. I woke as we pulled into Mykonos harbor about an hour later. We disembarked and ran a gauntlet of people hawking hotel rooms. It took at least half an hour for a hotel car to come and start transferring us but it would only take four people. I went with the first load. The Anastasio-Sevasi Hotel is above the main part of town. As we headed up the very steep hill to the hotel a woman came down the hill blocking our way. This resulted in a shouting match between our driver and her as we blocked traffic at the base. It was obvious that going uphill should have the right of way. We burned rubber heading up the hill. I checked us in to the very nice hotel with unusually spacious rooms and a great view of the town and the Aegean to the west. Then, I slept a little, then wrote a little, and then joined Anne and Bob for our evening bottle of wine with a great Gouda cheese. Around 7:30 we walked down the hill and wandered through the narrow streets of the medieval town in search of a restaurant. Mykanos is considerably more expensive than Naxos being a popular vacation destination. We skirted the gay section and settled at the Marco Polo Taverna. The food was good but not great. We decided to give the students the whole day off tomorrow. We will try to rent a car and explore other parts of the island for future reference for future programs. After dinner we walked back up the hill stopping for some stargazing before leaving the medieval section of town. At the hotel we charged Zack with the mission of informing the others of tomorrow's plan. I went to my room and wrote before taking a shower and retiring. |
