Day 16 Fotos

Since it was a day off I stayed asleep until 8:45. After breakfast, Anne and Bob informed me that the hotel wanted to charge us a total of E 200 for or transfers from and to the port. Since this was being laid on us 16 hours after being brought in, we refused to pay for the trip up and we told the guy we would get ourselves back to the port. Bob had rented a car for E 30/day so for another E 15 we got it for another half day to solve our problem.

Only a few students were up by 10:00 when the four of us hopped in the car and drove 10 or so km to the center of the island. We descended to the bay on the north side and visited the partially excavated site at Ftelia (late Neolithic). The site is absolutely littered with broken, low quality pottery and obsidian from Milos . Bob found a nice obsidian point and a piece of clay jewelry. It is a pretty site, right on the beach. Unfortunately, the beach is totally trashed with all of the flotsam and jetsam blown into the bay by the north wind.

We looked for a tumulus in the area without success before realizing that it had probably been excavated. We drove into the village of Ano Mera and had lunch at a restaurant, enjoying the only two sandwiches they had. Then, we drove to a monastery just outside of town (a convent actually) that was built near a 3 m high menhir. We were hoping to get to see the nuns worshiping it but no one was there. Anne refused to have her picture taken hugging it. “We worship the menhir because they won't let us out to worship the men there."

After a few wrong turns, we took the southern road back to town via the airport and after some searching found a recently excavated Myceneaen dromo-form tomb. It is thought to be contemporary with the one in Vafio that we will visit after the students leave. It is located high on a hill right behind a hotel. The view of Mykonos Choro is excellent.

We drove down to one beach that looked crowded so we went to the nude beach where we found most of our students. I stayed at the bar and didn't see any nudes, but the students had seen some at the ends of the beach. Jessica Singleton '05 met up with the group the group there. I don't believe I had ever met her before. On our way back to the hotel we stopped at a supermarket to get our evenings provisions. Then we learned the roads from the hotel to the port for tomorrow's transfers.

We drank a good, cheap Macedonian red wine and were joined by some students, Jessica, and her friend. We walked down the steep hill into town. Anne, Bob, and Drew went to the Maritime Museum . I went across the street and bought Elise a silver bracelet for her birthday from a nice young girl named Irene. We then walked to the port and bought boat tickets for tomorrow's trip to Dilos.

Bob and I were dehydrated and saw a place serving big mugs of beer so we stopped there for dinner. It was right on the harbor. Cruise ships had come in during the day. There were lots of festive people around. I had pizza. A bunch of students, Jessica, her brother Chase, and her friend stopped in, the latter three and Ruth stayed.

On the way back we looked for gifts for Deb Hall and Abbey Owen. I suggested we stop at Irene's Jewelry shop. She had just what we wanted so we took care of our shopping.

We made the long climb up the hill to the hotel. I wrote, showered, and retired around midnight.
