Brevard College's GEOL 270/AH 290 Field Trip to GREECE
JR's Journal In the Spring Semester of 2005, we offered GEOL 270: Geology and Archaeology of the Mediterranean Basin for the second time. For the first time, the course is co-listed as Art History 290. Students can elect eith listing and receive credit toward either a Science or Fine Arts distribution requirement. This time, the course field trip took us to the Greek islands, namely Crete, Santorini, Naxos, and Mykonos. We also visited the smaller islands of Moklos, Nea Kameni, Palea Kameni, Thirasia, and Dilos on day trips. This was my first visit to Greece so most of the time I felt like an expert onlooker. Fortunately, geological processes and products are pretty similar no matter where on Earth one goes. My two colleagues, Anne Chapin and Bob Bauslaugh were the real leaders of the trip. They are not only experts about the archaeology of Greece but they are also great people. They are a lot of fun to work and travel with, as is their son, Drew. Although just 8 years old, Drew has seen a huge amount of this planet. I am envious. We left the USA the day after Brevard's 2005 Commencement. Some of the students had gone over earlier. Some were traveling abroad for the first time. Everyone was pretty excited by the time we left. I would like to thank Denise Poole for quickly reading my scrawled journal and keying that mess into the computer less than two weeks after my return. Clicking in any of the boxes of the calendar below will take to the journal entry. |
