Brevard College's Geology and Archaeology Field Trip to BOLIVIA and PERUJR's Journal Isla del Sol to Copacabana |
I awoke at 6:30, dressed, and went around knocking on doors, including the owner's, to get everyone else up and going. We had a simple continental breakfast and then packed up and walked down to the beach on the east side of the island below the Fountain of Youth. I walked with Rafael; we missed the trail to the fountain so we met the others at the beach. After a brief wait on the beach, w e boarded our boat and headed northwestward up the east coast of the island. Most of the east side is limestone. The day was crystal clear with moderate wind. The water was very choppy as we rode topside. One wave gave us a strong tilt. We docked in a quiet cove that provided a view of the Cambrian (?) transgressive sequence. We walked up the hill through the strata. At the top is the exquisite Tiwanaku site known as the Labyrinth for its Labyrinthine rooms. We held a Tiwanaku ceremony with lots of Jallallas. Some of us participated in a pottery survey before going over to the Altar of the Sun where Rosse Mary performed a cleansing ritual on each of us. Many more Jallallas were said. It was a marvellous and moving experience to have this magnificent woman who is so incredibly sincere in her spiritual beliefs touch us all so deeply. About half of the group went back to the boat to ride to the town while the rest of us did an hour walk where we met the boat people for lunch. We walked through the transgressive sequence with its beautiful quartz arenite. One part went through exquisite ripple marks that dip steeply to the NE. Lunch in the small town consisted of simple sandwiches. Afterward, we boarded the boat and crossed over to the Isla de la Luna, stopping at the Temple of the Moon on its east side. The island looks like a red-headed snake. We held a brief ceremony at the temple before heading back to Copacabana. I bought a serpentine Andean Cross from a woman as I left the temple. The water was much calmer as we headed back. Will and Nicole went swimming and dried themselves in the warm sun up top. Those of us on top had a very long and deep discussion of global energy issues. I was very impressed with the students' opinions. Our ride across the gorgeous lake surrounded by spectacular scenery ended after two hours when we arrived at Copacabana. We took the steep way up to the hotel. We collected our stored bags and dispersed to our rooms. Bob and Anne got a room with a dome and a loft for Drew. Paige, Liz, and Will got a really cool room overlooking the bay. Bob, Anne, Rosse Mary, and I shared a bottle of wine at an outdoor stone table. We had a great dinner at the hotel and stayed up late reveling in the experiences we have had so far. My elevation headache seems to be gone. I had no trouble falling asleep. |
