Brevard College's Geology and Archaeology Field Trip to BOLIVIA and PERUJR's Journal Copacabana to Somewhere in the Road to Cusco |
I let everyone sleep in but most were up by 8:30. After breakfast in the restaurant, most people went shopping. I went to the internet café and returned to the hotel early. Nicole told me that Jay was sick with fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. He was very sunburned from two days in the sun without a hat. An American nurse staying at the hotel recommended electrolytes which the hotel sent a man to get. Rosse Mary's associate, Abigail, came to the hotel and I paid her $3500 to cover more than half of our Peru trip. Our bus came right to the hotel. We loaded it and rode about 15 minutes to the border crossing, arriving a little before 1:00. At the crossing we said good-bye to Rosse Mary, Silvia, and Abigail. Rosse needed to return to La Paz because her baby sitter had fallen through. The crossing was hectic and inefficient but we made it through fairly quickly. We boarded our bus to Puno and were on our way. Although the distance wasn't great, the road is rough and the bus is slow so it takes 3 hours. We passed through pretty lakeside scenery and saw numerous volcanic plugs. By the time we arrived in Puno, Jay was in bad shape. Our contact for the bus transfer, Antonio González, took us to the bus terminal clinic where the nurse took his temperature at 39°, she suspected it was a bacterial stomach infection so she gave him a shot and some pills. Antonio and I got him a bed at the Terminal hotel for our 5-hour layover. Will and Craig helped Jay up the stairs to the room. The nurse and I agreed that he should be seen by a doctor so she called a public health doctor who arrived 15 minutes later. He was arrogant and haughty but knew his stuff and gave Jay another injection and more pills. We traded shifts staying with Jay. Jay's total bill, including room, was about $30. Bob, Rafael, and Antonio took about half the students into town for dinner. The rest of us ate at the Terminal which wasn't bad. At 8:00 we boarded the Cama Bus for the eight-hour ride to Cusco . Jay's fever was lower but he was still in rough shape. I sat with Dan. Our seat was loose and shook with each of the many bumps in the road. That made good sleeping conditions for me. I was soon asleep and slept most of the way. |
