Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast

Cahuita National Park is situated on the Carribean shore, north of Puerto Viejo, not too far north of the Panamanian border. Its pristine beaches offer lesiurely hikes along the bay. Our campsite for two nights is just behind the trees along the shore. IAU will prepare the meals and a local band will entertain us one night. IAU will provide the tents. Participants just need to bring a light sleeping bag and sleeping pad.

South of Cahuita, at Manzanillo, snorklers will enjoy an afternoon investigating a Caribbean reef. Sadly, they will find that this reef is not doing as well as its Pacific counterparts due to siltation problems stressing the reef ecosystem. The silt results from the expansion of local banana plantations into the rain forest.

Camping on the beach sand is extremely comfortable, The sound of the nearby waves lulls everyone to sleep.
