Costa Rica JR's Journal Cahuita to Puerto Viejo
|
| I slept pretty well, awakening only for an aspirin break. I went
for a dip in the surf around 7:30, only Chris and Sarah B. were around.
Sarah has been under the weather since yesterday morning. She threw
up a lot last night and is feeling better today but did not get any sleep
last night.
The company prepared French toast and fruit for breakfast and people wandered in at their leisure. I spent a lot of time writing but I did play in the surf with Palmer for a while. I sat on the picnic table in the shade writing. I apparently was getting more sun than I thought because I burned my stomach and chest. I photographed some Caphuchin monkeys playing in the trees near the administration building. We left around noon and drove to Puerto Viejo where we stayed at Escapes Caribeños across the street from the beach. We walked into town for lunch. The place we ate couldn’t handle the arithmetic of dealing with a group our size so it took forever. Margaret was taken ill and went to bed after lunch. She said she hadn’t slept. It is very hot here. We returned to the hotel in small groups. Rachel rode on a motorbike with a Rasta man much to everyone’s chagrin. We sat around drinking beer and talking. The group dynamic has shifted to party mode. I’m pretty sure that it will be impossible to change it. Most of these kids have never drunk in a bar before legally so it is a real rush to have the freedom to do so. We went out to dinner at the Parquecito. Margaret and Sarah Carpenter stayed behind. I had filet of red snapper in caribeño sauce. I think it was the best fish I’ve ever had. Rachel’s Rasta man followed her in but had limited contact with her. After dinner the kids went out with Dani to a Reggae bar and then a Caribbean music dance bar. Jof and I walked back to the hotel instead. We had a beer with a couple of others who returned early. I went to bed after midnight hoping all would return safely. |
