Volcanology Field Trip to Guatemala:
Santiaguito and Santa María

This image, taken from Mirador San Carlos, shows the Santiaguito Domal Complex on the left
and Santa María Volcano on the right. Santa María produced an enormous eruption in 1902 that
blew away the south side of the mountain and exposed the guts of the volcano seen here. In 1922,
the Santiaguito domes began to erupt in the giant hole in the side of Santa María. These dacitic
domes have been in almost continuous eruption ever since and have grown many kilometers long.
