Volcanology Field Trip to Guatemala: Palmar Viejo Ruins

Just downstream from the suspension bridge is the site of Palmar Viejo. Note that the lahar rerouted the
river right through the town. You can see ruins of buildings on both sides of the quebrada dangling on the
edges. The only option was to move the town to a new site. This is a fairly frequent occurrence in areas
where there is a lot of natural energy in the environment. Americans could learn a lot from this practice.
