Fuego, on the left, is one of the most active volcanoes in Central America, hence its name which means fire.
The deposits of light colored ash at its summit attest to the frequency of eruptions. Acatenango, in the center has
had several recorded eruptions. Agua, water, has no recorded eruptions since the Spanish arrived in the area in
the 1500's. It gets its name from an event that destroyed the old colonial capital at the western base of the
mountain. The once water-filled crater disgorged its contents in 1541 causing a lahar to flow into the city.
