March 8-18, 2002 JR's Journal Brevard to Honolulu
|
| We left Brevard right on time in two college vans, taking US 64W to
Rosman and then followed 178 down to SC 11, which we followed west to I-85.
Our lunch stop was at a Wendy’s. We met some people who were spending
the weekend with Norm and Nancy Witek.
Our arrival at the airport at 3:00 was right on schedule. Beth and I went on a search for parking, after dumping the students and the bags. It took a while but we were ultimately successful. The group assembled and went through the security check and then regrouped at the gate. We waited an hour and a half before boarding the plane. Then we waited for more than an hour on the ground. Finally, we took off and headed toward LAX. They gave us a free movie: “K-Pax.” It was very good. I had salmon for dinner, which was excellent. They held our Honolulu flight because we had a total of 56 passengers on our Atlanta flight who needed to make the connection. Our stay in California was brief. In less than an hour we were airborne over the Pacific. I had a kosher meal on this flight, which was also excellent. I graded some exams but was too tired after the 2nd question so I put them down. Elise offered me a sleeping pill, which I took and then zonked for the final three hours of the flight. We arrived in Honolulu at midnight local time and picked up our bags.
When we arrived at the Hawaiian Air Terminal, it was closed so we camped
out on some outside benches in the warm midnight air and waited.
Most of us were able to get some sleep.
