March 8-18, 2002 JR's Journal Hilo to Kailua-Kona
|
Everyone assembled in the hotel lobby at 8:00. By popular request,
we returned to Ken’s for an excellent breakfast. We headed out on
Highway 19 by 10:30, and were soon driving along the lower slopes of Mauna
Kea through endless sugar cane fields. We turned off at Honokaa and
drove to the Waipio Valley overlook, where we had a tremendous view of
the mouth of the wide valley entering the sea. Two waterfalls cascaded
nearly 1,000 ft to the ocean. A black sand beach rimmed the valley
mouth. Surfers attempted heroics in the waves right below us.
Offshore we saw a humpback whale breeching.
We took pity on a biker who requested a ride back to the highway. Heath took him back in the Lincoln but was gone for more than an hour. The rest of us ate lunch and played while we waited. After lunch, we continued around the island crossing the saddle between
Mauna Kea and Kohala through the Parker Ranch. Clouds had already
hidden the mountain summits so we postponed our Saddle Road visit and drove
straight into Kailua-Kona. We found Uncle Billy’s Kona Bay Hotel
on Ali’i. It is newer and not as nice as the Hilo Bay hotel, being
located right in the center of things. We got our rooms and I let
everyone lounge until dinner. We ate at Kimo’s Buffet, the hotel
restaurant. It was okay but the least favorite meal so far.
After dinner, Beth and I walked along Ali’i. I bought Joan some
nice peridot earrings. We also made reservations for tomorrow's lu’au
at the King Kameameha Hotel. I returned to the room to find a party in
progress so I stayed up later than expected but it was enjoyable.
