Kailua-Kona to Honolulu (Waikiki)
March 16, 2002

Our 6:00 wake-up really didn’t seem too early to anyone.  Everyone was excited about starting the journey home.  We were loaded and headed out by 7:15 after seeing a nice sunrise over Mauna Loa.  The drive back to Hilo took a little over two hours.  We gassed up the vehicles and returned them at the airport.  The only problem checking in was that Liz had lost her wallet, but we were able to talk our way through.

The flight to Honolulu was brief with good views of Maui and Molokai.  We landed on the reef runway and got our bags.  I hired 3 limos to take us to the hotel, the Waikiki Joy on Lewers.  Although the place caters to the gay and lesbian crowd, it wasn’t blatantly obvious.  Most students didn’t notice.

We ate lunch at Perry’s Smorgy down the street and then everyone dispersed to the beach.  Staci and I walked down together.  She outpaced me in the sand.  I was distracted by a woman asking directions and lost sight of Staci by the time I finished.  Seeing an Internet café, I ducked in there for a half hour.  I looked up John Halloran and sent him an email but doubt that we will make a connection. He is not listed in the phone book.

Back at the hotel, I went to the room and found Heath and Troy already there.  It wasn’t long before all three of us were asleep.  We got up at 6:30 and met the group and José Acosta for dinner at the Shore Bird right on Waikiki Beach.  It was a cook-you-own deal on their grills.  I had Mahi-mahi.  It was superb.

We walked back to the hotel, overly stuffed.  After saying good-bye to José, I went up to the room.  Troy and I sat on the Lanai and talked for an hour before going to bed at midnight.
