Honolulu to LAX
March 17, 2002

I got up around 8:30.  Troy and I went down to the lobby where most of the others had gathered for a good complimentary breakfast.  Afterward, Troy and I walked over to the base of Diamond Head.  I had spent 4 weeks at the Tahitienne in 1991, in the home of my ex-wife’s great aunt, Nancy Armstrong, and I wanted to say hello.  Nancy, however, had remarried and I didn’t know her new last name to call ahead.

Nancy Quillen greeted us.  She recognized me but my name escaped her.  I introduced myself and it was just like old times.  I was sorry Elise wasn’t with us.  She served Troy and me a strong cup of coffee out on her beautiful lanai, 5 floors above the water’s edge in the palm fronds.  I lived on this idyllic lanai for the four weeks I spent there, letting the sound of the waves lull me to sleep each night.  Surfers, and sea kayaks played in the waves beyond the reef and snorkelers swam in the reef.  Troy, like anyone else who has ever visited Nancy, was quite taken with the place.

Nancy had a noon appointment so we left and walked along the esplanade back to Waikiki.  We had a good lunch at Cheeseburger in Paradise, on Kuhio, while the St. Patrick’s Day parade marched by outside.

We walked back to the hotel and met up with Jon, Nick and Beth.  The five of us walked over to the Imax theatre where we saw, “Hidden Hawaii,” a rather spectacular film showing lava, cliffs, and waterfalls.  We all enjoyed it even there were some scenes that were obviously staged.

Back at the hotel, the others recounted their day’s adventures.  Heath rented a Ferrari for $600 and drove it around the island.  Only Heath would do that!  Most of the others went to the beach, got varying degrees of tan and sunburn, and then went shopping.

The bellhop Yasu, arranged limos for 7:30.  We had a good dinner at Cappucino’s the Hotel restaurant.  Once again, no one left feeling hungry.  The limos were waiting when we finished so we loaded up, piled in, and drove to the airport.  A bunch of us had a last cigarette in Hawaii and then trundled through security and sat in the waiting area for about an hour before boarding.  The plane took off about 20 minutes late.  I fell asleep within 20 minutes after taking off and did not wake up until we landed at LAX.  The flight was apparently very bumpy but I never felt a thing.
