JR's Journal Puerto Natales to Punta Arenas, Chile
|
| We arose, ate, and were ready to go by 9:30. Outside of town,
I realized I had left our Argentine geologic map at the hotel. I
suspect that the maid had put it in the closet so that it wouldn’t be in
my way. That worked! It was definitely not in my way.
The trip was pretty but uneventful. Overcast skies and a strong wind prevailed. We took the Río Verde detour and were soon blocked by a large flock of sheep being herded down the road by men on foot and horses and about 10 dogs. We got out and took lots of photos and videos. I tried counting the sheep but fell asleep. After driving through the flock, we passed Seno Skyring and entered the Fitzroy Channel. We pulled into the Hostería Río Verde, where I had stayed in 1998, and negotiated to eat the sandwiches we had brought in their confitería. Our sandwiches were terrible but the ambiance was great with a roaring fire in the fireplace. Everyone loved the place. I’m sorry Ljubica wasn’t there. It would have been nice to see her. Her grandfather was the only family member there. We drove on to Punta Arenas under overcast skies. We pulled into the Hotel Austral in Punta Arenas. It was a nice place with good service. I went to an Internet place and spent more than an hour on email. Another cocktail party had erupted back in one of the hotel rooms so we stood around drinking wine until it was time to walk the 3 blocks to Sotito’s Bar on O’Higgins Avenue, where we drank more wine as we waited for an excellent meal of conger eel; always a treat! Returning to the hotel, Sally, Greg, Bob O. and I split a bottle of
wine before retiring for the night.
