JR's Journal Punta Arenas, Chile to Lago Escondido, Tierra del
Fuego, Argentina
|
| We were unable to get a reservation for the Punta Arenas to Porvenir
ferry crossing so we drove for ~100 km along the Straits of Magellan to
the crossing at Primera Angostura. I was impressed with how much
paving the Chileans have done in the last 3 years. Both the roads
from Puerto Natales to Punta Arenas and Punta Arenas to Punta Delgada are
now completely paved.
We arrived at the ferry crossing just as the ferry arrived so we were aboard and heading out within 20 minutes. The crossing was remarkably smooth when compared with the 10’ swells I had 3 years ago. We were the first off of the boat and headed south toward San Sebastián. We took the road through Cullen, which I had not been on before. Crossing the border into Argentina was surprisingly fast so I entered the hostería at 2:30. Angel had told them we would arrive around 4:30 so they were completely unprepared for our arrival. It was good to see Aquiles again. We made plans to get a zodiac out on the bay next year. They threw together some paltry ham and cheese sandwiches, which I don’t think satisfied anyone’s hunger. Afterward, most people walked along the beach and experienced a strong Fueguian west wind. It was a clear day so I think most people liked it. It was great to be back! We drove southward on Ruta 3 to Río Grande where we took a wrong turn and ended up wandering through the back streets of Río Grande for 15 minutes. I have yet to find any redeeming value in this place. Next, we stopped at the Hostería Kaiken to make arrangements for tomorrow’s lunch. We took a lot of pictures of Lago Fagnano and the beautiful lupines growing in the hotel gardens. We drove the final 40 km to Lago Escondido and pulled off into the road to the Hostería Petrel. The place is absolutely beautiful, sitting on the shore of a hidden mountain lake (hence the name). Most of us stayed in cabins on the lakeshore. They were a Maine kind of rustic. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was excellent. Everyone loved the place. After dinner, Judy, Bob O., and I looked at the Southern Cross.
Then, Bob and I went back to the cabin we were sharing and shared a bottle
of wine. I had no trouble falling asleep.
