I ordered 6:30 wake-up for everyone. The hotel put on the best breakfast we'd had on the trip. We loaded the bus when it arrived with those from the Montserrat. We drove immediately to the ferry dock. We only had one reservation, for some reason, so Angel had to take the Green Machine up to Primer Angostura to cross the straits.

The ferry ride across the Straits of Magellan to Porvenir was smooth sailing under overcast skies. I spent a lot of time outside talking with Tim. We headed east, after disembarking in Porvenir, along the north side of Bahia Inútil. We made it to the border at San Sebastián in a little over an hour. The crossing went surprisingly smoothly. I went through first and then went over to the ASA Hosteria to order lunch for the crowd. My friend, Achiles Mansilla, the owner, was there. I ordered sandwiches for everyone and the students got their drinks from the refrigerator. The momentos argentinos started about then. After sitting for about 20 minutes, Achiles came out and asked how many sandwiches we wanted. The waitress, also in a fog, started serving about 20 minutes later but only served one of our four tables. I ordered more food but she kept bringing it to the same table, occasionally sending a plate of sandwiches our way. When I finally confronted her she said she didn't realize I wanted to feed everyone in the group. I wasn't even sitting at the table being served.

Meanwhile, Angel and Raul had still not arrived. They had told me that the battery problem was resolved. I stopped trying to guess what had happened, but decided to stay put in case he didn't come since he had all of the luggage. I told the students to take in the beach. Jackie and Guto both found beautiful specimens in the pebbles. Others found cool shells.

After waiting more than four hours, Angel finally arrived. Battery problems were the main deterrent but he thought it was now fixed. The line at the ferry crossing and the poor condition of the road between Primera Angostura and San Sebastián also slowed progress.

We left so quickly I forgot to say good-bye to Achiles and his wife. It was raining most of the way and it was dark by the time we reached the end of the pavement at Tolhuin. We arrived at the Hosteria Petrel at 12:15 to find it locked. We made lots of noise and a very dumb guy came to the door. He admitted remembering Angel making the reservation but apparently forgot to enter it in the book.

We got two cabins for the students and some preferred to camp. I decided to get a single room which, to my surprise had a jacuzzi in it. Had it not been so late, I would have used it. The students all went to bed without eating. Angel made sandwiches for Carlo, Raul, himself, and me which we ate in the dining room. I then went to my room, took a shower and went to bed, my desire for sleep overcame my urge to use the jacuzzi. I paid $45 for the room.
