Day 14 Fotos

We got up at 7:00, ate breakfast, and I had the students make their own lunches. A little after 9:00, Andrea and her colleague Alejandro arrived on the first bus from Ushuaia. We loaded everyone into the Green Machine and drove about 10 km to Bahía Ensenada where I had taken a TiO2 sample in 1998. The trail runs along the north side of the Beagle Channel. It is an easy 8-10 km hike through the beech forest with frequent vistas up and down the channel and of the Chilean islas Navarino and Hoste on the south side of the channel. Andrea and Alejandro were excellent guides. Both were very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the region. Alejandro was particularly good with birds so he and John stayed together a lot. I talked with Alejandro more and more as the day progressed. He's a great guy. Andrea was great too.

We ate lunch on the channel shore. Almost everyone went on this hike. Once we got to the road back to camp, all but 8 went back to camp. The rest of us continued the final 4 km to the Lapataia Bay overlook and the terminus of Ruta 3. Angel met us there and brought us back to camp. We hung out at the confiteria, drinking beer and watching all of the raptors and rabbits in the campsite.

Dinner was ready by 9:30 and we stuffed ourselves with chorizo, morcilla, a tossed salad and a potato salad. A lot of wine was also drunk. After dinner, the wind started to howl. Josh, Jackie, Ari, Wendy and I went down to the beach to enjoy some wine in the wind. After the bottle was finished, I went to my tent and crawled into my bag. The roar of the wind lulled me to sleep quickly.
