Day 10 Fotos from Torres del Paine National Park

Cascada Paine on the Río Paine tumbles over the Jurassic Tobífera Formation, a black shale with interbedded tuff layers. The tuffs were erupted from island arc volcanoes to the southwest of the park.

This is a view of the towers from Lago Azul in the northeastern part of the park. A bunch of us walked up the hill through the meadows while Angel and Raúl prepared lunch.

The wind had really picked up by the time we returned to the lakeshore.

Fortunately, the picnic area had enough trees to form a windbreak so we enjoyed the our meal in the sunshine.

This is one of the classic views of the Torres del Paine rising above the north side of Lago Nordenskjöld. The Tertiary granodiorite intrudes the Tobífera Formation which is seen at the summits of the towers.

The only foto of the entire group was taken by our bus driver with Angel's camera and cameras of many of the group members.

This view of the central towers was taken from the bridge which no Green Machine may cross on the way to Lago Grey.

By the time the second shift got to Lago Grey, the weather had worsened considerably. After a short hike to the edge of Lago Grey, we walked across what must be a lacustrine tombolo during higher lake stands, to the rocky island/peninsula in the middle. Numerous icebergs beach themselves just offshore. The Grey Glacier can be seen beneath the brightest clouds several kilometers distant at the north end of the lake.

Icebergs run aground on the far side of the island/peninsula too but the lake extends much farther to the south (right).
