Day 13 Fotos from Lago Escondido to Tierra del Fuego National Park

This is the view of Lago Escondido from the hotel.

Dave made a friend in spite of the language barrier.

This is the eastern shoreline of Lago Fagnano: the South American-Scotia plate boundary. The 1949 earthquake on the fault caused a seiche that swamped the eastern end of the lake, killing the forest and forming a swamp.

The view from the summit of Garibaldi Pass overlloks Lago Escondido in the foreground and Lago Fagnano in the background. The distant mountains are on the South Americam Plate.

The beautiful Carabajal Valley is situated along an older strike slip fault/plate boundary about halfway between Lago Escondido and Ushuaia.

Peat is mined from the bogs in the Carabajal Valley and exported to Punta Arenas.

This very hungry group of GSA students kept wondering what had happened to Angel as they waited for the boat to depart and their lunch and boat tickets to arrive. Most were ready to tar and feather him but he did finally arrive with only moments to spare.

This is the northern shoreline of the Beagle Channel on the east side of Ushuaia. Mt. Olivia is the jagged peak.

L'Eclaire lighthouse is situate in the middle of the Beagle Channel east of Ushuaia. Isla Navarino, Chile is on the right and Argentine Tierra del Fuego is on the left.

It is a rather lovely but lonely place.

Cormorants make up most of the bird population on this rocky island in the middle of the channel.

Mt. Olivia looms above the bird rock in this telefoto image.

Sea lions and cormorants seem to get along pretty well .

Some rocks were just littered with sea lions. We also saw a couple of seals and a sea elephant.

Mother sea lions urge their pups into the water.

Back in Ushuaia, Rick and Kyle jazzercise with the locals at the wharf.

Tim and Yanch put on a credible display of soccer volleyball.
