Day 4 Fotos from Lago Argentino, Upsala Glacier, and Estancia Cristina

Michala, Amanda O., Ari, and Wendy clown for the camera as we sailed out on Lago Argentino, headed for the Upsala Glacier.

An incredible number of icebergs are found at the west end of the lake. Most calved off of the Upsala Glacier, the largest glacier that enters the lake.

Rick and Thad enjoy the iceberg views in spite of the cold wind.

After rounding a bend in the lake, the glacier came into view. Like the Perito Moreno Glacier, Upsala descends from the Southern Patagonian Ice Cap.

The boat stood off a couple of kilometers from the Upsala Glacier. This mosaic created from a video pan shows the entire glacial front as it floats out into the lake. The wall is 60 m high and more than 2 km across. The glacier has retreated a couple of kilometers since I first visited the area in 1989.

The ice creates all sorts of whimsical shapes.

This is a telefoto view of a medial moraine in the glacial wall.

After our visit to the glacier, we landed at Estancia Cristina, within the national park, and hiked a couple of kilometers up to a cascade through a winding channel. From left to right are Rick, Jackie, Lauren, Guto, Dave, and Nick.

The water in this stream comes directly from the glacier farther up the valley. Most people filled their water bottles and took a drink .

Back at the ranch we were treated to a superb asado with excellent meats, vegetables, wines, and desserts.

The meat is cooked over wood coals in a glassed-in fire pit in the middle of the dining room.
