Geological Society of America's Student-Oriented GeoTrip "Patagonia--New Year's at the End of the World"
JR's Journal This was the first time I've attempted a camping trip in Argentina and Chile, or even in a developing nation. Although I had a pretty good idea of the logistical problems that we would encounter, I was pretty sure that there would be things that I had not foreseen. The language barrier was not too much of a problem for most people but the different pace of life takes some adjustment. We had a fair number of vehicle problems on the trip but rather than complain, most students just made the best of it and had a good time. There were a few whiners who I don't think could ever be content to roll with the punches. Most people dealt with the long drives and late meals really well. I think almost everyone really enjoyed the geology and Patagonia. This trip would not have been possible without the efforts of Edna Collis, at GSA and Angel and Raul Mansilla of Sumaj Kay. I'd like to thank Jennifer Epley and Ruth Hobson who managed to read and enter my handwritten journal into MS Word format so that it could be presented here. Clicking in any of the boxes of the calendar below will take to the journal entry. Most days will eventually include some photos. |
