This summer I had the opportunity to some hiking in the forests surrounding Brevard, and I thought I’d email directions and suggestions for various hikes and healthy activities. I’ll probably do this every week or 2 over the course of the year. *  I also have a Wellness Calendar and Resouce List that may interest you.

Coontree Loop

Driving directions**: From the college, drive right on Broad Street for several miles until you get to the Pisgah Forest intersection (near the Wal-Mart store). Turn left into Pisgah Forest (Route 276N). Continue for about 4.8 miles until you come to a parking area on the left (it is called Coontree Picnic Area). You will see the trailhead across the main road. This is where you begin the trail. It is a loop about 3.7 miles long and is a moderate hike, steep in places. It takes you through a wooded area, up and around beautiful mountains. Note: you never have a great, spectacular view, but you definitely feel a part of the woods as you hike.  You may even see some turkey or quail.

Hiking directions: Total distance - about 3.7 miles. This hike is moderate but starts off very flat, running along a creek. In less than 1/2 mile you will come to a Y where you can take the loop to the left or right. I took the right loop, and followed the blue blaze through and around and up the mountain. At one point I did make a wrong turn at a poorly marked creek crossing. I headed left up the hill and had to back track to follow the correct path across the creek. After maybe a mile, the trail will intersect with Bennett Gap Trail and both travel together for a distance of about another mile. You will then see the two trails split and you continue to follow Coontree Trail back another mile or more to the Y where you'll join the common trail back to the parking lot. When I took this trail, I forgot my map and my water and was "just going for a stroll" and I recommend strongly that you bring both. At least water. The trail climbs quite a bit and you'll be happy to have the liquid along with you. I think the trail would be fun in the fall - you'll have lots of leaves to walk through. I understand there are wonderful wildflowers in May.
